How Does CDS Work?
In consumer-directed services, you (or someone you trust) pick and train the people who care for you, plan when and how they’ll help, and choose how they’ll assist you.
Benefits of CDS:
- You stay in your home and community.
- You pick your caregivers, possibly even friends or family.
- You manage your care. You are in charge.
- Cost-effectiveness. Can reduce overall care expenses.
Applying for CDS:
You can apply as a CDS by having the following requirements:
- 18+ Years Old
- Have a Qualifying Disability
- Be enrolled in Medicaid
CDS is designed for individuals who can demonstrate the ability to live independently with assistance. Therefore, CDS empowers recipients to manage their own care, allowing them to hire and supervise personal care attendants of their choice, which can include friends or family members (spouses and minors cannot typically be hired).
You must meet specific financial criteria to participate in CDS, including asset and income limits associated with Medicaid’s long-term care program. Once these requirements are met, potential participants undergo an assessment to develop a personalized care plan that aligns with their individual needs and preferences.
